Super Junior-M, also stylized as SJ-M, is a Chinese sub-unit of the South Korean boy group Super Junior. The sub-unit is the first international music group in the Chinesemusic industry to have members of both Chinese and Korean descent.[2]
Formed in 2008 by South Korea's S.M. Entertainment, Super Junior-M became the third and most successful subgroup branched off from the Korean band Super Junior. The sub-unit originally consisted of leader Han Geng, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook, Kyuhyun and two additional members appearing exclusively to the subgroup, Zhou Mi and Henry.[2] In December 2009, Han Geng filed a lawsuit against S.M. Entertainment and decided to leave the main group and sub-unit, resulting in the sub-unit's temporary disbandment.[3]
After a year-long hiatus, Super Junior-M returned with addition Super Junior members Eunhyuk and Sungmin. They released Super Junior-M's second mini album Perfection in February 2011. After Han Geng's leave, the group considers Sungmin as the new 'leader',[4] as he is the oldest member of the team.[5] However, S.M. Entertainment has not released any statements about electing a new group leader.
On April 30, 2018, Label SJ released a statement announcing Henry's departure from the group, leaving Zhoumi as the only Chinese member.[1]

History[edit]
Name origin[edit]
Before the official name of the subgroup was released, they were known by 'Super Junior China'. On April 3, 2008, SM Entertainment announced their official name to be Super Junior-M, with 'M' representing the word 'Mandarin'.[6] The 'M' can also represent a list of other aspects, such as the first letter of their debut album Me, and also 'mí' (Chinese: 迷), the pinyin for 'charismatic' and 'fan', the latter meaning referring to their desire to connect closer with fans.[6]
2007: Formation and controversies[edit]
In October 2007, SM Entertainment announced that a new Super Junior subgroup would debut in China in 2008. Super Junior's original member Han Geng, and a new member Henry Lau, who performed the violin solo of Super Junior's 'Don't Don', were announced to be the first two of seven members representing the subgroup.[7] Some of Super Junior's official fanclub, E.L.F, signed online petitions and held protests to express their dissatisfaction and opposition of adding a fourteenth member to the group, fearing that a new member would mean one of the original lineup would get 'replaced'.[8] Many fans boycotted Super Junior's products and held silent protests in front of SM Entertainment's main building in Seoul, holding signs of the 'Only 13' slogan.[9][10]
Over one thousand fans appeared in front of the SM Entertainment building on E.L.F's third protest on November 3, 2007.[11] Instead of a silent protest, the fans sang various Super Junior songs and shouted 'thirteen.'[12] Fans purchased 58,206 stocks of SM Entertainment, holding 0.3% of the company's entire stock.[13] They released a statement through the media, stating that they would obtain all chances to prevent SM Entertainment from adding new members and to keep Super Junior as only thirteen.[13] SM Entertainment later announced that they would not add the new subgroup members to the main group.
2008–2009: Debut and commercial success[edit]
From April 4 to April 7, 2008 the seven members of Super Junior-M were individually announced to the Chinese media in a chain of short trailer clips. The first member, Han Geng, was announced to be the subgroup leader on April 4.[14] On April 5, Siwon and Donghae were revealed to be the second and third members.[15] On April 6, Kyuhyun was announced to be the fourth Super Junior-M member, following the new member, Henry, as the fifth.[16]Ryeowook and another new member, Zhou Mi, were announced to be the final two members on April 7.[17] A trailer of all seven members was released on the group's debut day, April 8. Super Junior-M's trailer clips exceeded 1.4 million views in less than four days.[18]
Super Junior-M debuted in Beijing on April 8, 2008 at the 8th Annual Music Chart Awards, simultaneously with the release of their first music video, 'U' on Sohu.com.[18] 'U' is a translated Chinese cover of the 2006 song 'U', originally by Super Junior. They released their debut album Me in selected provinces of China starting April 23, 2008. A Korean version of the album with three bonus Korean-language tracks was released in South Korea on April 30, 2008. A modified version of the album was released in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan on May 2, 2008.[19] Though a majority of the tracks in the album were Mandarin remakes of Super Junior's previous Korean hits, reviews were generally positive. Hong Kong Cantopop singer, Hins Cheung, critiqued the album favorably, saying that the album contains 'international-level music' and that the group is 'vocally-talented'.[20]
A month after their debut, Super Junior-M won their first award, Asia's Most Popular New Group, at the 5th annual Music King Awards in Macau on May 25.[21] They took home another three awards that year. On December 27 and 28, Super Junior-M held their first concert, the Super Junior-M Show, in Hong Kong.[22]
Following their debut performance in April 2008, the group made a few successful guest appearances in many chains of entertainment variety shows to promote their album. They appeared in an episode of the second season of TVB and HunanTV's collaboration show, Strictly Come Dancing, which made the show's ratings increase to 5.01%, ranking it the third most watched show ever in all of China.[23] Super Junior-M's appearance in the talk show Behind Story (Chinese: 背後的故事) also increased ratings. The show had the highest ratings during their time slot, with a strong 4.05%.[24] Separated into several weekly episodes, the group's appearance in their first episode on the challenging game show Bravely Going Forward (Chinese: 勇往直前) in early August gave the show the highest ratings during that time slot as well.[25] In August 2008, Han was cast in the idol television drama Stage of Youth, a mini-drama dedicated to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Han portrayed Xia Lei, a youth who aspires to be a famous dancer. Other members of Super Junior-M gave cameo appearances in the final episode.[26]
In September 2009, Super Junior-M released their mini album, the EPSuper Girl. The album garnered them a nomination for Best Vocal Group at the 21st Golden Melody Awards.[27] The EP's title single 'Super Girl' is Super Junior-M's most critically successful song to date, winning numerous accolades for its composition and performances.
2010–2011: Lawsuit, lineup changes and Perfection[edit]
In December 2009, Hangeng filed for contract termination from SM Entertainment, claiming that the provisions of his contract were unlawful, harsh, and against his rights.[28] Super Junior-M immediately canceled all of their future activities and performances in China and Taiwan. They returned to Korea to begin preparing for Super Junior's fourth studio album. Han, however, stayed in China and signed under a new management, releasing his debut solo album Geng Xin in July 2010.[29] Although Super Junior-M remained largely inactive for most of 2010, they won several accolades for their song 'Super Girl' at China's 2010 MusicRadio TOP Awards, including Most Popular Group, Golden Melody Award (Top 15), and Best Composition.
In December 2010, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of Han. Silent hunter 5 offline play crack. However, SM Entertainment announced that they will file an immediate appeal to reverse the decision. In September 2011, Han and SM Entertainment officially came to a mutual agreement regarding Han's contract, closing the case.
In February 2011, Super Junior-M resumed their activities with two new members from the main group, Eunhyuk and Sungmin, with the release of EP Perfection. It debuted at number 2 on Taiwan's G-music chart,[30] and stayed on the chart for four weeks.[31] The repackaged version of the album was released on April 29, debuted at number 2, and stayed on the chart for 10 weeks.[31]
2013–2018: Break Down, Swing, and Henry's Departure[edit]
In 2012 the group resumed their activities in China when they performed on 2 October, along with Kim Jang-hoon and EXO-M in a special concert to mark the 20th anniversary of South Korea and China's diplomatic ties hosted by Shanghai Media Group.[32] This was followed by official from SM Entertainment confirming that the group are in the planning stages of their comeback with a new album.[33] On January 7, 2013, Super Junior-M released their second album, Break Down, along with the music video for the lead single of the same name. A press conference took place in Beijing on January 7 and promoted the album in China.[34] They promoted the album in South Korean mutizens for a week as well different Fan Meetings in Asia. The song debuted No.1 on the Billboard charts.[35]
After one year and three months since their second album 'Break Down', Super Junior-M released their third EP album, Swing in China on March 21.[36] Previously on March 18, 2014 Super Junior-M had unveiled the teaser image for the EP. A press conference was held on March 22 in Beijing, which was broadcast live online and viewed by over a million people. The album was later released on Korean music sites, such as MelOn, genie, Naver music and more, on March 31. They held their first comeback stage on China's CCTV's 'Global Chinese Music List' and continued in Korea, performing on music programs for 2 weeks.[37] The title song, Swing, is a pop dance song that mixes in both R&B and electro sounds. The album contains six Chinese songs, produced by hit makers Yoo Han Jin, hitchhiker and Henry’s team of composers, NoizeBank, as well as the Korean version of Swing.[37] The music video for Swing debuted on Chinese video sites Youku, Weibo, and iQIYI on March 23, before being released on YouTube on March 24. In 2015, Sungmin began a military service. The rest of members recorded a song titled '每天' (Forever with You) in Super Junior’s album Devil. Than, the group began a hiatus.
On March 31, 2018, Super Junior-M’s parent group Super Junior held its seventh world tour Super Show 7 in Taipei. Member Donghae mentioned that Super Junior-M plans to release new album after all members return to the team in 2019.
On April 30, 2018, Henry decided not to renew his contract with SM Entertainment, and left Super Junior-M.[1]
Members[edit]
In December 2009, Hangeng departed from the group after filing a lawsuit against their agency S.M. Entertainment.[38] Hangeng subsequently won the lawsuit in December 2010.[39]
In April 2018, Henry parted ways with the group after a decade. SM Entertainment revealed, “Henry’s exclusive contract recently expired, and we have ended on good terms.” Henry has completed his contract with SM Entertainment and he has decided to leave the agency.[40]
From March 2015 to August 2017, four members have completed their mandatory military service. Sungmin enlisted for his service on 31 March 2015 and completed it on 30 December 2016.[41] Eunhyuk enlisted for his service on 13 October 2015 and was discharged on 12 July 2017. Donghae enlisted for his service on 15 October 2015 and was discharged on 14 July 2017. Siwon enlisted for his service on 19 November 2015 and was discharged on 18 August 2017.[42]
From August 2017 to present, two members enlisted for mandatory military service. Ryeowook enlisted for his service on 11 October 2016[43] and was discharged 10 July 2018. Kyuhyun enlisted on 25 May 2017 and was discharged on 7 May 2019.[44]

'U' is a song by South Korean pop group Super Junior, and is the group's follow-up release to their debut album Twins. The single topped CD sales charts during the first several weeks after its release on June 7, 2006.[1] 'U' peaked at #1 on the monthly MIAK K-pop album charts and sold 91,416 copies by 2008.[2] The song won a total of five music recognitions, being Super Junior's most successful single in the music charts until the release of 'Sorry, Sorry' in March 2009. Promotional performances for the title song, 'U', did not complete until September 2006. The last general performance for the song was in August 2007 in Tokyo, Japan.
Since the Korean release of 'U' in 2006, there has been two more releases of 'U' in two different languages, Mandarin and Japanese. The Mandarin version of the single's title song 'U' was released in a special Taiwan edition on June 15, 2007. On July 9, 2008, 'U / Twins' was released in Japan, which included a Japanese version of 'U' in the limited edition release.
Super Junior-M, Super Junior's Mandopop subgroup, also released a cover of 'U' on April 8, 2008, marking it the second Mandarin version and third remake of 'U'. In this version, however, the lyrics were changed completely from the first Mandarin version. Also, new incorporations of a new jazz swing style with new acoustic guitar arrangements and an added hip-hop dance bridge and violin bridge were added to make the song suitable for the Chinese language while keeping close to the original Korean pop vibe.

History[edit]
Prior to 'U', Super Junior was known for their member line-up, a concept very similar to Japanese girl group Morning Musume. Certain members of Super Junior's first generation were to be switched out and new members were to be added, which would form a second Super Junior generation. However, after the addition of a thirteenth member, Kyuhyun, the group ended their status as a project group and began to release productions as a group with permanent status. 'U' is Kyuhyun's debut single.
'U' was made available for download on May 25, 2006 via Super Junior's official website. The second track from the single, 'Endless Moment', became available for download four days later. 'U' had over 400 thousand downloads within five hours of release and ultimately exceeded 1.7 million downloads, crashing the server.[3]
Composed by Norwegian composer Ken Ingwersen and British musician Kevin Simm, the song was promoted to be a song of 'pure pop and dance' with contemporary R&B influences and harmonization.[4] The rap lyrics of the song were written by Eunhyuk, in which the rap is divided to two solos, the first half for Eunhyuk and the second half for Kibum. Donghae also rapped in the background of Kibum's solo.
Several remixed versions of 'U' were performed, but none of them were released as official singles. One remixed version of the song contains a dance bridge in the middle of the song right before the rap, and another version had the song completely mixed, creating a different pop vibe throughout the whole song.[4]
Reception[edit]
'U' became one of Super Junior's biggest hits. 'U' yielded number-one spots for five consecutive weeks on two of Korea's top music programs for the first time in the group's career. The song was crowned as SBS Popular Songs' Mutizen Song of the week as soon as it was released, being the first award for the group since debut. The song then stayed as Mutizen Song for three weeks on the same program, also simultaneously grabbing two top awards from M.NET's M!Countdown for two weeks. Before promotions for 'U' ended, 'Dancing Out' was released on July 23, 2006 as part of SMTown's annual summer album, grabbing two awards as soon as it was released. 'U' gained critical success, and Super Junior collected over seven awards in five of South Korea's top music award ceremonies as 2006 came to a close, winning Best New Group and popularity awards.
'U' peaked at #1 on the monthly MIAK K-pop album charts, having sold 83,010 copies by 2007, selling more than their debut album Twins by the first half of 2007.[5] The Taiwanese edition of 'U' debuted at #6 and peaked at #5 on the Five Music J-pop/K-pop Chart of Taiwan and charted in the top ten for six weeks.[6]
Since the single's release, the song 'U' had won Super Junior over five notable music awards. Super Junior won their first award since their debut after the release of 'U' on June 25, 2006 as the SBS Popular Songs Mutizen Song, and stayed as Mutizen song for three consecutive weeks. The single also won Super Junior the Best New Group at the prestigious M.Net/KM Music Festival on November 25, 2006. The single has since earned more awards.
Music video[edit]
The music video for 'U' contains only scenes of the Super Junior members performing their group dance. Yoona of fellow SM Entertainment group Girls' Generation provides the only female role in the music video.
The four-minute video mainly consists of the thirteen members performing their choreographed dance. Much popping, sliding, and waving were used in the performance, like many of Super Junior's other street dancing techniques. Chest movements and hip movements are heavily used and the pelvic thrust is also used in the dance, which became a famous action in future 'U' parody dances.

'U' is the first promotional single for Super Junior-M, the third official sub-unit of Super Junior. The song and music video were released online in China on April 8, 2008, on the day of Super Junior-M's debut. The song, including the rap, is completely performed in Mandarin, which differs from the previous Mandarin version done by Super Junior, where the rap segment is performed in Korean. Although the lyrics convey a similar meaning, the lyrics of the two Mandarin versions are different.
'U' is one of the twelve tracks featured in Super Junior-M's debut studio album, Me, which was released in April 2008 in China and South Korea, and later throughout Asia in May 2008. Super Junior-M's modified version of 'U' contains heavier bass instruments, a closer musical approach to hip hop and jazz. The song also has extra music bridges, such as a violin bridge performed by Henry (reminiscent of Super Junior's Don't Don) and an added dance bridge, which makes the song almost a minute longer than the original Korean release. Super Junior member Yesung appears in the song as a stock vocal as his parts are originally from the original Korean version of 'U'.
The dance choreography for Super Junior-M's 'U' is also completely changed from the original. The choreography contains a variety of styles, such as different elements of street dancing and jazz dance to complement the maturity in the song, which slightly differs the image from the main group. The music video features the now f(x) member and leader Victoria, with her face dominating the mirrors, and the Super Junior-M members searching for her presence.
